Description: The aim of the course is to give the PhD students better knowledge and understanding of the world of research they are entering. The course will relate to the personal situation and experiences of the participants. Hopefully the course will make the PhD students better equipped to address their situation, to ask questions and to realise that there is a large body of knowledge and questions available. The PhD students should also realise that science and research can be a field of enquiry just as all other human activities. The course will draw on a number of disciplines including the philosophy and history of science, the sociology of science, science policy studies, science statistics, and science of science. The course will also draw on our own experience from the world of research. The course will contain lectures, discussions and presentations from the participants. The course will be arranged in six sessions. Written background material will be sent to the participants before the start of the course, and additional material and references will be distributed during the course. The participants must study the written background material before the course starts. Each participant must give a 5-10 min. oral presentation of his/her PhD study programme or of another subject related to individual experiences from the research world.
